Climate change has a significant impact on increasing global flood events. As global temperatures increase, polar ice is melting, resulting in sea levels rising. Data from NASA shows that sea levels are increasing by around 3.3 millimeters per year due to climate change. This increase leads to the risk of flooding in coastal areas, which are becoming increasingly vulnerable to seawater intrusion. Large cities such as Jakarta, Miami and Bangkok are experiencing serious threats due to the combination of rising sea levels and increased rainfall. The effects of climate change do not only occur in coastal areas, but also in land areas. Changes in weather patterns result in extreme weather events, including heavy rain. According to the IPCC report, the frequency and intensity of extreme rainfall is expected to increase in the next decade. Flash floods, which are usually caused by very heavy rain in a short period of time, are now increasingly common, especially in mountainous areas in Southeast Asia and South America. The sustainability of the drainage system is also affected. With increased rainfall, existing drainage infrastructure is often unable to handle the increased water volumes. This causes flooding in dense urban areas. In large cities, such as Dhaka and Mumbai, infrastructure is often inadequate to manage increasing water runoff, which in turn triggers public health problems and economic losses. The flood phenomenon also causes extraordinary economic losses. Flood recovery costs reach billions of dollars each year. Various sectors, including agriculture, industry and services, experienced serious impacts. Crops submerged in floodwaters are damaged, resulting in reduced crop yields and food shortages. Rainfall-dependent agriculture must also adapt to weather uncertainty, which is increasingly becoming a global challenge. The health sector was not spared from the impact of prolonged flooding. Stagnant water creates an ideal habitat for disease vectors, such as mosquitoes, which can lead to outbreaks of dengue fever or malaria. In addition, water pollution due to flooding can cause gastroenteritis and other health problems. The availability of clean water is also threatened, which has the potential to increase the burden on the public health system. The social impacts of flooding due to climate change are also very significant. People living in flood-prone areas are often forced to flee, causing an increase in the number of refugees and social shocks. Social injustice is further exacerbated, with vulnerable groups being most affected. Limited access to resources and support in emergency situations increases challenges for already marginalized populations. Handling and mitigating the impacts of flooding due to climate change requires comprehensive strategies and sustainable policies. Planting vegetation, managing catchments and improving drainage infrastructure are important steps that can help reduce the risk of flooding. In addition, public education about disaster preparedness is also very important to increase community resilience to climate change. Sustainable climate change requires global cooperation. International efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, such as the Paris agreement, should be pushed forward more vigorously. Without significant action, the risk of global flooding will continue to increase, threatening the lives of millions of people and affecting economic and social stability worldwide.
